Header Icons

What are the icons in the table header for?

General table header icons

These icons occur on all tables in Sussex Direct:

view the help file for this table
View the specific help file for this table. The footer of each help file contains details on how to contact BIS Help (bishelp@sussex.ac.uk) for support.
open the table in a new window
Open the table up in a new window. This allows you to print just the table, and gives you access to extra features such as a CSV file for importing into MS Excel. See 'New Window table header icons' below.
minimise the table
Minimise the table. This leaves just the table header visible. Click on the icon again to maximise the table.

These icons occur on some tables in Sussex Direct:

amend your details
Amend details which have already been entered into the system.
enter fresh details
Enter fresh details into the system. The new details replace the existing ones.
add another set of details
Add another set of details to those already on the system.

Table header icons for lists of people

Tables containing a list of people show additional icons in the table header. These icons allow you to:

view photos of your students by their names
View thumbnail photos of the people in the list, alongside their names. Click the icon again to switch the photos off.
view photos of your students in a new table
View photos of the people in the list in a new table.
email the people in the list
Email the people in the list. For instructions on how to use Sussex Direct's Email facility, download and print this Guide to using the Sussex Direct emailer (PDF).

'Edit' mode table header icons

These icons can appear in the table header when you click on Edit, New, or Add.

leave 'edit' mode
Leave 'edit' mode without saving any changes.
save your changes
You *MUST* click the 'Save' button to save your changes.
reset the data to how it was
Reset the data to how it was when you entered 'edit' mode.

New Window table header icons

These icons occur on tables viewed by clicking on the 'new window' icon new window in the table header:

close the new window
Close the new window.
create a file to import into Microsoft Excel
You can create a 'comma separated value' file to import into Microsoft Excel. Click the 'CSV' icon. In the new window that opens up, select all the rows you want to use and copy them (Ctrl-C for Windows, Apple-C for Mac). Now start Excel and paste (Ctrl-V for Windows, Apple-V for Mac). Column A of the new rows should already be highlighted. Click the 'Data' menu, then select 'Text to Columns'. In the Wizard that appears, ensure that 'Delimited' is selected for the 'Original data type', and click 'Next'. Now, under 'Delimiters', tick the box next to 'Comma' and click 'Finish'.
create a PDF of the table
Create a PDF (Portable Document Format) document of the table.
create an XML file
Create an XML (Extensible Markup Language) file of the data in the table. XML files allow you to import and export data between applications that support this format.
print the table
Print the table.
