What are the icons in the table header for?

Why do I need to register to vote?

It is a legal duty for all eligible adults to register to vote in the UK.

I am already registered at my home address, do I need to register here too?

Students are allowed to register at home and term time addresses to make sure that studies are not disrupted by the need to travel to vote. They can vote in both sets of local elections, but only once in any national election or referendum. It is up to the student whether to take up this option - you only need to be registered in one place where you live for much of the year.

Am I eligible to vote?

If you have been given access to this screen it normally means that you are one of the nationalities which can vote in UK elections. In addition to UK and Northern Irish citizens, all Irish, EU and Commonwealth citizens with leave to remain in the UK have the right to vote in at least some UK elections. A full list of nationalities with the right to vote is available here.

I have been asked to register to vote but I am sure I am not eligible

Please give the reason why you believe you are not eligible in the box provided. There are some exceptions to the general rules.

Can I be fined for giving the wrong information?

It is highly unusual for people to be fined. In most cases, if a mistake is made it can usually be easily rectified by contacting the local electoral services team. Fines and other penalties are designed to deal with attempted fraud, which is thankfully rare.

The Electoral Services team for Brighton and Hove is based at the Town Hall in Brighton. Email them at electors@brighton-hove.gov.uk, or call on 01273 291999.

I don't know my/ don't have a National Insurance number. What can I do?

To become a student at Sussex you have already provided the University with sufficient information to prove your identity for the purpose of registering to vote. This is accepted by the government without the need for further proof, such as checking your National Insurance number.
