Course Stage Results: How to read

Year: The course stage results table contains a row for each completed academic year and the expected future academic years.

Stage: Courses are split into stages, with a progression point or award point at the end of each stage.  Most taught postgraduate courses just have one stage, even when taken over more than one academic year.

Stage Mean:  The stage mean is calculated as the sum of all the module marks for that stage weighted by the credit volume of each module.  The weighted mark for a module is

(module mark * module credit)/total credit for stage

For example, for an undergraduate on a Bachelors with Honours award

Module 1: (70% * 15) / 120 = 8.75%

Module 2: (65% * 15) /120 = 8.125%

Module 3: (65 %* 30) / 120 = 16.25%

Module 4: (66 %* 30) / 120 = 16.5%

Module 5: (67 %* 15) / 120 = 8.375%

Module 6: (72 %* 15) / 120 = 9%

Stage Mean = (8.75% + 8.125% + 16.25% + 16.5% + 8.375% + 9%) = 67%

NOTE stage means are rounded to integers, means >= n.45 are rounded up, < n.45 are rounded down.

Weighting: Module marks achieved in some stages count towards the final mark (often referred to as ‘Grand Mean’) used to determine award classification.

For example, for an undergraduate on a 3 stage Bachelors with Honours award

Grand Mean = (stage 1 mean * stage 1 weight) + (stage2  mean * stage 2 weight) + (stage 3 mean * stage 3 weight)

Stage 1: 67% * 0% = 0

Stage 2: 65% * 40% = 26%

Stage 3: 68% *60% = 40.8%

Grand Mean = 26% + 40.8% = 66.8% which is rounded to 67%

NOTE the weighting of postgraduate stage 1 is not shown in the course stage results table – it is always 100% i.e. all credit weighted module marks for stage 1 count towards the grand mean.

Credits: Each module has an associated amount of credit.  When a module is passed the student is awarded the corresponding amount of credit for that module.  A certain amount of credit must be achieved to enable progression from one stage to the next, and to qualify for the final award.  The rules relating credit to progression and award vary between different academic awards.

The figure shown is the total credit achieved for the stage so far, if there is more than one row in the table for the stage, the figure in each row is the total credit accumulated so far for that stage, and not just the credit achieved during that academic year.

Stage Result: At the end of each stage an examination board considers students marks and credits and decides results – these results are displayed here, there are many possible outcomes. Click on the result to see a web page giving further information about that particular result.

In the current academic year the result field will initially display the date and time at which the result is due to be published; when that date and time is reached the result will be displayed. Early in each academic year this field may be blank, this means that the results publication dates have not yet been set.
